Making over any space can be daunting but please don't let that stop you! Recently, I had a special newly-wed-couple who wanted to upgrade their master bedroom space and I was extremely excited for the challenge because the room was a blank canvas and had no place to go but up. They are very busy professionals and absolutely wanted to upgrade their space but had no time or inclination for design so they put it in my hands. After our consultation, we decided the direction for the master: “HOTEL CHIC.” Who doesn't want to come home after a stressful day and have a soft place to land? So this is just what I set out to do. Beginning with the structural items for the room, like the side tables and lamps I decided to go with the traditional style for these pieces and flanked the bed with large matching side tables. This balanced the room and helped make the room feel much
more substantial. As with most clients, a drawer was a must and is a great way to hide any clutter, electronics etc. Every room I design, for couples especially, needs to have both masculine and feminine elements. The side tables were dark wood, very manly, and the lamps were mercury glass which brought up the glam factor for her. I also placed matching mirrors above each bedside table because a well designed room needs reflective elements to help the eye move around the space. The placement of mirrors in the bedroom is also important because many people do not like to see themselves in bed so by placing them to the side of the bed this solves that problem. Next, was the most important part of bed room design; the bedding, this is my speciality! As an admitted bedding-alcoholic, this is also the fun part. Always remember to begin with the right base, a great mattress is the best investment anyone can make because you can't put a price on constantly sleeping well. The next layer is a plush mattress pad and then a feather bed and bottom sheet. I choose white sheets pillows and duvet cover with a feather comforter for my base to work off of then added the decorative layers. Since this room style was to be “hotel chic” my goal was to evoke the feeling of the Ritz Carlton or the Four Seasons so I had to take it to the next level. Next, I purchased some Euro pillows and found some lovely islet cream shams, as well as, some white ruffled shams to balance the much more masculine Ralph Lauren paisley pillows and comforter along with the plaid blanket. Now it is coming together! Finally, the throw pillows. I found a couple of Cheetah print pillows to add to the style but you never want to “over due” animal prints, so take it easy here a little is GOOD a lot is NO BUENO! Fortunately, while shopping for the bedding, I stumbled upon a extra large hand carved Tibetan room screen which made a lovely and unique headboard and was an absolute bargain which made the decision ultra easy! This piece would help make this space one of a kind and grounded the room so nicely. Finally, to complete the space I found a oversized bench for the foot of the bed because every bedroom needs to have a place to sit. When placing anything at the foot of the bed it is important to be sure that it is slightly more narrow than the bed so the corners are not exposed. It was time for the final touches to this room transformation. I curated an artistic bedside collection for each of them. For him, a masculine smelling candle, a small green succulent and a black globe place neatly on the side table and for her a unique decorative box for trinkets, a delicate orchid and a small wooden Tibetan statue. Then I placed a throw blanket on the bench as well a a mirrored tray and added a couple more pillows to the bed for good measure. The newly-weds absolutely love their new space and have been spending a lot of extra time in it just relaxing, talking and enjoying each others company, which as a designer, is so nice to hear! If you are considering upgrading your master bedroom space, don't wait! People tend to save this space for last but I say treat yourself first and create a lovely space to enjoy as a retreat! Why not consider adding some “Hotel Chic” of your very own? Sometimes the hardest part is just getting started.
