This Valentines Day, I encourage you to think outside the chocolate candy box! Skip the roses and fighting the crowds for dinner reservations why not try to romance your sweetheart and have a date night in? It can also be a wonderful idea to include the kiddos and creatively show some love or treat your close friends to a special unexpected holiday treat! After some brainstorming, here are a few ideas you can do from home that may inspire you this Valentines Day and will put ol' cupid to shame in the process!

As a long time resident of Water Valley, our house was build in 2000 and the previous owners did not share the same “passion for interior design” and made some interesting choices; so with some hard work, we made it our own twelve long years ago. Just before we moved in, we did a slight re-model and made some changes to the interior. Unfortunately, over time, things have
started feeling a little dated much to my dismay. We are not talking avocado appliances anything to that degree but admittedly, designs trends change both in furnishings and in the structural surface design items like the trim, flooring, tile, paint and counter tops. Recently, we decided to make some designer changes to update the Turner household and add some fresh style that is more current with today's design trends. Walking trough the neighborhood this Spring, I notice the small things; perfectly placed planter urns flanking a front door, a bundle of tulips surrounding a budding cherry blossom tree, a softly bubbling water feature, a brightly painted front door beckoning me to come inside, a promising farmers garden just beginning to sprout, or even a quaint bench with well styled pillows grab my attention! Water Valley truly is a charming neighborhood with its unique blend of home styles. Every homes exterior has the potential to be great, with a little effort your home can have that “WOW” factor and show some personal style.
In order to understand design and how it relates to your homes interior there are some basic design principles put into practice to create a finished space that is pleasing to the eye. These principles include unity, balance, focal point, rhythm, scale & proportion, details and last but not least color. They are all are useful in implementing great interior design and it is relativity easy to incorporate these principles in your own home. Yes, thats right...you can do it!
Making over any space can be daunting but please don't let that stop you! Recently, I had a special newly-wed-couple who wanted to upgrade their master bedroom space and I was extremely excited for the challenge because the room was a blank canvas and had no place to go but up. They are very busy professionals and absolutely wanted to upgrade their space but had no time or inclination for design so they put it in my hands. After our consultation, we decided the direction for the master: “HOTEL CHIC.” Who doesn't want to come home after a stressful day and have a soft place to land? So this is just what I set out to do.
Ahhhhh camping! Camping is a wonderful summer pastime many people enjoy, myself included but sometimes it really can be quite a chore. Tent camping especially had become taxing, so much so that it was starting to happen less and less in our household. Packing the tent, sleeping bags, mattresses, air pump, bug spray, sunscreen, pots pans, bbq grill on and on it was too much to remember it all each time and would take many days of preparation. I would ALWAYS inevitably forget something ultra important like pillows or underwear which would make for a “not so great” outdoor experience. Sleeping on the ground is not really a pleasure after age ten anyway. Oh, if only this all could be avoided! With two growing boys who love outdoor adventure and a very busy husband I set out to find a “mom friendly' and fabulous way to embrace the great outdoors once again so I could
continue to make life long memories with my boys! As many long time Water Valley residents will tell you, after a long cold winter of hibernating indoors Spring here and it is a time for fresh beginnings and time to reconnect with friends, family, neighbors and loved ones. The key to a great Spring gathering is simplicity. Keeping your menu and décor simple will allow your guests to feel comfortable and you to
enjoy spending time in their company. |
